"Scratch Here, Please!"
... by Kathleen Kenner

Horses love a good scratch.  Especially in the spring, when they shed their shaggy winter coats to reveal shiny new short summer coats.  Tess has been working on her communication skills, to let us know exactly where she most wants a nice scratch.

Tess is a handsome chestnut quarter horse with a great, "can do" attitude. She loves people, and has been known to hang out with us when we have gathered to talk.  One afternoon she left her grazing and wandered over to stand with us in our human circle for more than a half hour, as we shot the breeze together..

"Right here, please!".   Tess has perfected the art of letting us know exactly where she needs a scratch.  When we obligingly scratch her side in just the right spot, she communicates her pleasure by touching us on our arm or side with her nose.  Then she swings her head forward and stretches her neck out with sheer enjoyment.
