SUPER Horse Camp Provides Year-Long Educational Benefits
The Kenner Ranch is expanding their summer program to include a resident "immersion version" of their Goal Rush Rider program. Aptly named "Super Horse Camp", this series of week-long overnight programs has been developed to provide youths 9-15 years old with an experience of a lifetime.
Says Kathleen Kenner, "We love to see the bonds of trust develop between our horses and our young campers. Everyone wins. Working and having fun with the horses each day, our campers learn their routines, their individual personalities, and needs. Meeting those needs, and moving themselves and their horses to the next level awakens a sense of leadership and self reliance. The power of those feelings is priceless - and is earned by our campers themselves."
A unique strength of the Super Horse Camp Program is the use of computer technology to provide a tool for each camper to create a permanent record of their weeklong experiences. Writing and critical thinking skills develop in parallel with horsemanship and riding. "The creation of living journals and logs sets up our camp residents to see their own progress, described in their own words. The power of being able to point to a line in the journal and say 'Look how far I have come!' is, well, immeasurable. Imagine how far each of us could go with the written proof of our own success in our hands."
Developing literacy and success-mapping skills is not limited to the camper's residence week. The largest ongoing benefit of Super Horse Camp comes to them once they have returned home. As charter School pioneer and program director Sandra Thorpe explains, "Super Horse Camp is actually a year-long program. We provide the technology and commitment to help our campers develop their writing and step-by-step goal achievement skills throughout the entire year. We see these skills as fundamental to the success of our youth. Colleges look for articulate students with critical thinking- and writing skills; new SAT requirements directly underscore the importance of literate thinking."
Says Dr. Thorpe, "We live in a world where we must increasingly be able to articulate our value to ourselves, as well as our peers, institutions of higher education and employers. Our goal at the Kenner Ranch is to develop that ability in our resident campers as well as our Goal Rush Riders."
